Frugal Tips for in the Kitchen

July 31, 2025 by Davee Kilian Leave a Comment

Being frugal in the kitchen starts with ideas like making food at home, eating leftovers and using what is in the pantry. Here are 10 ways to save money in the the kitchen.

Eat in kitchen with view of counters and cupboards

Right now in the Summer of 2025, the economy is not easy on many people’s finances. Prices of everything are higher and it makes grocery shopping and eating a challenge. Hopefully this post can help you think through how to save on money in the kitchen for you and your family.

Eat at Home

When trying to be frugal with money, eat meals at home. This will take some planning ahead with having food in the pantry and fridge and having meal ideas prepared. On the flip side, not eating out multiple times a week will be an asset to your food budget. Create a rhythm for you and your family that allows you to be home at least for the evening meal. Your family will thank you and so will your wallet.

Make Meals from Whole Ingredients

Making meals from whole ingredients coicides to eating at home. When cooking food for you and your family use the wholest form of food you can find. Shopping the exterior of the stores usually helps in this area. The raw fruits, vegetables, meats, dairies and starches are located on the outer walls of most grocery stores.

Produce in grocery store

When you buy whole foods you can also make them work for multiple meals. For example: a five pound bag of potatoes can be used as baked potatoes one meal, mashed or fried potatoes the next. Put that together with a pork chop or roast and some sauted carrots, and you have a meal. Simple ingredients that work together well.

Eat Leftovers

When trying to be frugal in the kitchen do not throw leftovers away! I really emphasize this because it seems to be a tendency for some Americans to waste food. If you have a certain meal in the evening, reheat it for lunch the next day or bring it to work to eat the following day. Freezing leftovers is also another great option. This works two-fold as there will be no wasted food and another meal will be already made for later eating.

Cook with what you have

Cooking food with what you already have in the pantry or refrigerator will help you be frugal in the kitchen. Do not buy ingredients that will only be used once or that will get pushed to the back of the fridge just to go bad. Creating simple meals with whole ingredients, like mentioned above, will help with less food waste. There are also helpful internet searches that allow you to take pictures of what you have in your refrigetor and generate meal ideas from that. Use your resources to save money on food!

Buy Seasonal Produce

Buying the produce that is in season for each particular time of year reduces grocery expence. Most in season fruits and vegetables are usually the ones on sale. Again, there are also easy internet searches to help you find what is in season for your area. Buying watermelon in the winter does not make sense when it is clearly on sale and in season during the summer months. Besides, in season produce usually tastes better during the time of year it is grown.

Meal Plan

Meal planning can be really helpful for frugality in the kitchen. I’m going to be honest and share that I tend to not be a whole-hearted meal planner. What I mean is, I have an idea of what meals I will make for the week, and have the meats thawing in the refrigetor, but they can be flexible. I share more about my weeknight meal planning style more in detail here.

Buy in Bulk

Buying certain foods in bulk will not only help keep us frugal, but will help us be more prepared. Our family of five tends to go through masses of certain foods. We buy most of our grains, oats, flours, meats and cheeses in bulk. Azure Standard and Costco tend to be our main resources for the bulk dry goods. Buying items that you know your family will eat and that you will use often, is worth storing in the pantry. Our family of five can go through twenty-five pounds of rolled oats in four months. Finding local sources for our meat has also been a cost saver. Getting a quarter or half of beef or hog is how we keep our freezer stocked with meat. The prices are usually cheaper that way too.

Make Snacks

When looking to save money on groceries, make sure to avoid the prepackaged snacks. I’m not one to say, NO PREPACKAGED SNACKS EVER! Our family does buy some prepackaged snacks like RX Bars, Lara Bars and Beef sticks, for when we are out and about or traveling. However, I do highly recommend making or eating homemade snacks. Some simple snack ideas that our family has include: yogurt with honey and banana; cheese slices with apple, veggies with homemade hummus, homemade power bars, and many different types of breads or muffins that I make.

Here are a few muffin or bread recipes for you to try:

Slow Cooker Greek Yogurt

Taking time to prepare snacks for the week will set you up for more success, less money spent and also give better nutrition to your family.

Make Coffee at Home

Making coffee at home is a major habit to create to save money. Stopping at a Starbucks for a morning coffee each day really racks up the expense. We have a Breville Espresso Machine that my husband and I use each day. The investment of the machine over three years ago has greatly paid off. Our morning coffees and my afternoon latte costs us mere cents compared to many dollars of a coffee shop drink. Even without an espresso machine fun drinks can be made. A hand help milk frother can be used for lattes and simple flavor shots or Stevia drops add a fun addition to the coffee. Enjoy the coffee, just from the comforts of home.

Keep the Appliances and Gadgets Simple

A budget friendly kitchen contains only the equipment necessary to function well without all the bells and whisltes. In our kitchen we stick with the basic appliances and no extra gadgets. Keeping only the items we use on a pretty regular basis is best. A slow cooker, Instant Pot, Blender, Toaster, Kitchen Aid Mixer, Food Processor and Immersion Blender are the appliances our family uses most often. Yes, we also have a waffle maker, but we use it two or three times a month. I prefer to save money and make my rice on the stove instead of a rice cooker, or bake my french fries instead of an Air Fryer. Figure out what your family uses most often and how to simplify the extras in your appliance area.

Simplify the Kitchen

The best advice I can share for being frugal in the kitchen is to keep it simple. Less ingredients, simple meal ideas and minimal appliances creates less expense for your family. Most of my 10 tips can be done with some forethought and a little planning.

I hope these tips have been helpful and have given you some ideas on how to save a little more money in your home.

Your Friend,

Davee
