Cleaning the home for Fall is just as important as cleaning the home for Spring. Taking some time this season to do a fall cleaning will create a much cozier and inviting home. Try out these Fall cleaning routines for each area of your home.

It is the beginning of September and everyone is sharing content about their Fall decor and making the home cozy. I truly enjoy all of that, however, before the beauty and warmth gets added, we need to get to the nitty gritty of the home. Let’s start with some Fall cleaning.
When I prepare my home for Fall, I take some time during a week to do a deeper clean. This basically is the same as what I do in the Spring, but it still can vary year to year. So let’s jump in to what I like to accomplish with my fall cleaning room by room. Just an FYI, many of the tasks done in each room are the same. Each task just takes time and effort.
Living Area
This space is where we spend much of our time. With living in a small home of only 950 square foot, our kids and I use this area A LOT! This space needs to be more cozy for the fall and winter months, but it needs a some TLC first. Here’s my living room checklist.
- Wipe and dust off light fixtures
- Do touch up painting. Paint areas that have dings or scratches. This year I painted my window trim. It had not been done in the nine years of us living at this home, so it was time.
- Wash windows on the inside and outside and wipe down blinds.
- Launder pillow covers and throw blankets
- Vacuum out furniture and/or wash the cushion covers.
- Take area rugs outside to air out and beat the dust out.
- Wipe floorbaseboards. This would also be a good time to check if this area needs touch up painting.
Some of these tasks are done more often than the Spring and Fall cleaning times. If these areas can only get done for Fall cleaning that is great, and if they can get done more often, all the better.

Kitchen Fall Cleaning
The kitchen is most definitely the most used space in our home. From canning and preserving in the Summer months, the kitchen is in more desperate need of fall cleaning. Yes, there is still other garden produce to can and preserve like tomatoes and apples, but a little cleaning won’t hurt.
- Wipe and dust light fixtures.
- Do touch up painting.
- Wash windows on the inside and outside and wipe down blinds.
- Launder curtains.
- Scrub cupboard fronts and backsplash.
- Deep clean table and chairs. Any grooves or cracks that food may have gotten stuck in.
- Scrub the kickboard under all the cupboards.
- Clean out or defrost fridge/freezer.

Bedroom Fall Cleaning
In our home, we only have two bedrooms. Our master bedroom, shared with the newborn and our other three kids’ room. No matter how many bedrooms a home has, this area can sometimes be neglected. Dust bunnies show up under all the beds, closets get stuffed to full of clothes and toys and windows never get opened. Let’s change that today with some deep cleaning. Tip: Make it a habit to open the curtains each morning and maybe even the windows to let some fresh air in. Also add under bed cleaning to the weekly cleaning schedule. You will thank yourself for these later!
- Wipe and dust light fixtures and ceiling fans.
- Launder curtains, blankets and duvets or comforters. If you do not wash bedding at least every other week, try adding it to your cleaning routine. Do a little research on how gross bedding gets just in one week!
- Sweep under and move the beds to get all the “surprises” out and the dust.
- Touch up paint if needed.
- Wash windows and blinds.
- Hang and put away any clothes or items in the closet that do not have a home. If there is extra time, declutter any Summer clothes that was not worn in that season or that no longer suites you.
Bathroom Fall Cleaning
This room should never be neglected. As a family of six living in a one bathroom home, this room definitely deserves some TLC. I do a pretty extensive weekly clean, however the Fall cleaning takes it even farther.
- Wipe down and wash all the light fixtures.
- Clean out the ceiling vent. Ours gets very dusty, so it needs some cleaning.
- Wipe down the walls. With moisture in the bathroom, I like to wipe down the walls to get the extra grime off.
- Scrub the shower & bathtub. This happens on a weekly routine for me, which helps reduce the scum and mildew build up.
- Wash the shower liner and curtain.
- Get in all the cracks and crevices. Take a toothbrush and clean around all the faucets, handles, back of toilet seat, etc.
- Wash the floor. This again is a weekly cleaning regiment.
Here is a tip to keep the vanity top clean. Keep a spray and rag under the sink. Wipe down the top surface as needed to keep it make-up, toothpaste and hair free!
Overall Fall Cleaning Tips
When cleaning the home for Fall, here are a few pointers that I try to apply during my time of cleaning.
- Work your way from top to bottom. When cleaning each area, start at the ceiling and work your way down to the floor. All the dust and other things that happen up high will get cleaned up at the end when the floor gets done.
- Do not do this all in one day! Most of us have other things in life going on. Taking a few hours a day to do this deeper clean will still allow you to accomplish the Fall cleaning, but not get overwhelmed.
- Use a good cleaner. There are many cleaning products to choose from, just make sure to use one that works well and that is safe for you and your family. My go to is my DIY Cleaning Spray. It is all natural and safe for the household.
- Make a list. The visual of a list helps us know what has been done and what is left.
- Get the family helping. If you’ve got age appropriate kids, give them a task to help with.
Hope this can be helpful for your Fall cleaning!
