A fruit crisp is one of my go to desserts. I usually have all the ingredients on hand, it is very versatile with any fruit and it is always delicious! This pear crisp recipe was adapted from a rustic apple crisp recipe that I grew up with. That recipe calls for much more butter and sugar (which is not always necessary, but it sure tastes good). For the crisp I found that using such a sweet fruit made it easier to reduce the sugar content. A lighter dessert for the win!
TIPS FOR MAKING AN AMAZING PEAR CRISP
- Peel the pears. If the skin is left on, it makes the fruit filling have a chewier texture to eat.
- Rolled or quick oats work for this recipe.
- Add thickener. Do not omit the flour or the fruit may be a bit runny once it is baked.
WHAT YOU NEED
Tools
Two medium mixing bowls
Cutting board
Knife
Spoon for mixing
Measuring cups
Small baking dish – 8×8 inch or 1.5 quart baking dish
Ingredients
- Pears – Smaller bartlett pears were used in this recipe. If you want to use larger ones, just use two less pears.
- Brown sugar – Dark or light sugar.
- Flour – Unbleached organic all-purpose flour was what I used, however I have used fresh ground flour too.
- Butter – Soften it to make it easier to mix or melt it most the way on the stove.
- Oats – Rolled oats work nicely in this recipe.
- Cinnamon – Adds a beautiful flavor to the pears.
- Salt – Just a pinch for the topping.

HOW TO MAKE PEAR CRISP
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Peel, core and slice the pears.

Put them in a bowl and toss with brown sugar, cinnamon and the two tablepoons flour. Put the mixture into a greased 8×8 inch or 1.5 quart baking dish. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, combine the crisp topping. Stir together the flour, oats, brown sugar and butter. Mix until it resembles coarse crumbs and still remains moist.

Spoon the crumb topping onto the pears.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45-55 minutes or until edges are bubbly and topping is browned.
Let rest for 10 minutes.
Enjoy warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
