The art of adding beauty to the home, inside and out, creates a space worthy of any homemaker. Finding what inspires you and using what suites your space are some simple ways to create joy in the home.

The art of beautifying a home may seem frivolous or not necessary to some. In my time as a homemaker, I have come to find joy in bringing beauty into the home and outdoor spaces. Crafting a space with things we enjoy can give us more motivation to continue in the work we do around our homes.
I’ve walked into many homes where the homemaker does not care about the space. They often have an air about them of overwhelm, a lack of joy and little care for their homes. Having a heart not desiring more for the space God has entrusted us with truly affects the rest of our lives. All that to say, there is nothing wrong with enjoying beautiful things in our homes and learning to create that for our spaces.

Art of Beauty in the Home ~ Decor
Each home is very unique in it’s own way and so are we as homemakers. We all have different styles we enjoy and different ideas of how a home should look when it comes to beauty. Finding what you enjoy is the best place to start! My style has changed over the last many years of making home. From the eclectic and more rustic knick-knacky look, to a more vintage cottage style, I have come to love my space.

To find out what I liked in my home I really had to just experiment and look at different styles for inspiration. When browsing Pinterest, flipping through books, watching TV shows and touring other peoples homes, I would gather ideas (and even take pictures) that I wanted to create in my home.
How to find decor for beautifying the home
Looking at second hand shops and garage sales is the most cost effective way for me to find decor for the home. Over the years I have added and taken away many different pieces. Those items may have been something that I appreciated for awhile, but then I realized it was not really being enjoyed in my space. Since the items were pretty affordable, being second hand, I felt okay passing them on to someone else. My home decor style was learned by trial and error.
One of the best tips I can give with finding decor that fits your style is to not just buy to fill a space. Many times we see a blank space on our walls or an open shelf. We tend think we need to put something on those bare spaces. Instead, really gather your ideas and find out if what you want to add suites you and is enjoyable to your home. Leaving spaces blank is not a bad thing. Too much stuff can also bring overwhelm and more chaos in the home. I touch on this in What Makes a Good Homemaker & Small Home Living Tips & Tricks. Many of my home decor posts also touch on the topic of finding affordable decor for the home.

The art of beauty in the outdoor space
Adding beauty to the outdoor space is also a way to extend our home. It is Spring time and the outside is coming alive. For our family, this means that we spend over half our days in our backyard space. Creating an outdoor oasis is just the thing for making our home an inviting place.
Whether the outdoor space is a small apartment balcony, a large lawn with an extensive garden or a cement pad, each space can be beautiful. Adding touches of potted plants, outdoor seating and a little rug are a few simple ways to beautify the space. A smaller deck area we have always gets a second hand wicker chair, some ferns I save from the previous year and an outdoor rug. This year I did purchase a new rug and cushions for my space to enhance the space from the outdated pieces I had. Simple touches add such an extension to our home. It also creates beauty that I enjoy sharing with my family and any guests that come over.

Important thought on the art of beauty in the home
The art of beauty in the home comes from the heart. Having a heart to create a space that is welcoming, peaceful and practical is truly valuable. The humblest of homes can have beauty when it makes us happy. Truly, the art of beauty stems from the feeling and presnce that is presented. I want to leave you with a quote that resonates with this idea.
“Your home isn’t defined by the four walls that surround you—it’s more of a feeling rather than a specific place“. ~ House Beautiful
