Creating a cozy and inviting winter kitchen can be done with some simple touches. The kitchen is the “heart of the home”. It is a space that should be filled with love as well as items that we find beautiful and functional. A few ways to make a cozy and inviting space include adding potted herbs, candles, displaying dishes and fresh baked goods. Let’s explore the details of a cozy and inviting winter kitchen!
Less is More
A cozy and inviting winter kitchen does not have to mean an over abundance of “things” on the surfaces. That is honestly how I keep my home most the time anyways, but it applies even more now. After the holidays the clutter and extra decor is taken down. That means there is more open counter space and surface area, which is a win in my book! Winter is the time to bake and be in the kitchen. Having more counter space available to bake and cook is important. A few decorative pieces, some fruit, cutting boards, knives and my mixer is all I keep on my butcher block counter.
A centerpiece with character
A centerpiece can be a great way to create a cozy and inviting winter kitchen. We have an eat in kitchen with a table, so a simple feature on the table gives the space a welcoming touch. An island, a prep cart or even a butcher block stand could be what is used for your creative centerpiece. Maintaining the “less is more” theme, I went with a simple collected centerpiece. A rosemary herb plant (purchased here), a vintage pitcher, a tapered beeswax candle (purchased here) and some wood beads (purchased here), were all gathered on a thrifted round wicker tray. Nothing more than that and my statement centerpiece is complete.
Practical yet decorative
Having pieces in a kitchen that are useful yet decorative is a nice way to create a cozy and inviting winter kitchen. Put a few wood cutting boards against the backsplash or set some serving plates on a shelf. These are simple kitchen items that we use, but that look good sitting on display. A fresh grain sack towel and some more herbs are also beautiful and practical touches.
Lighten up but add some color
When creating a cozy and inviting winter kitchen, I always think lighter and brighter yet with a few pops of color. A neutral color palette is where I tend to lean. Keeping whites, browns, and creams as the steady feature colors lends itself to a welcoming space. After the holiday greens, reds and golds have been removed, a fresh neutral palette always seems to make for a great winter kitchen. Having a few accent colors, however is important too. My kitchen has some touches of blue that can be found in the curtains and on my rug. An inviting winter kitchen needs to convey freshness and life, and what better way than through some minimal accent pieces.
Keep the coffee coming
An cozy and inviting winter kitchen should have a space for the coffee maker, tea kettle and other warm drinks. The area where you have these drinks needs to be functional and well stocked. Winter months are a time to invite a friend over and have an espresso or tea and share in some refreshing conversation. I make sure my espresso machine is always ready with cute mugs, fresh milk for lattes and some good beans. Having the area look cozy as well is something to add to your coffee station. Vintage plates hung on the wall, an accordian rack with a pitcher, eucalyptus wreath and an apron dress up my coffee bar. It is still functional yet inviting for the winter kitchen.
Don’t be afraid to open your home!
Creating a cozy and inviting kitchen not only comes from the aesthetic you create, but from how you use the space through hospitality. It is wonderful to have a home that is cozy and beautifully done for our own enjoyment. On the contrary, why not allow your space to be enjoyed by others?! Hospitality is something that I feel is important as homemakers. We should use our cozy kitchens to drink coffee and eat fresh cookies with our friends and family. A cozy and inviting winter kitchen requires us to have some company and share our tables with others.

Your tea is especially inviting-really have shared it with quite a few ladies and they loved it. The joy of having ladies coming into our homes is always fun-take care.

Yes that tea is quite lovely. Hospitality is a gift that God has given us, isn’t it.
