Refreshing a home after Christmas can be tricky when the lights, trees, evergreens and stockings come down. I want to share 7 ways to make your home feel refreshed after Christmas. It is important to make your home feel cozy, simple & inviting for the winter months. Starting off a new year with a home you enjoy being in is very important. I often feel torn between leaving my holiday decor up until after the New Year or taking it down. This year I opted to refresh my home after Christmas right away and get started with a clean slate.

Refresh Your Home ~ Do a clean sweep of all your Christmas decor
Make sure that the Christmas storage totes are cleaned out and ready to be refilled. Decluttering any unused decor, broken ornaments, missing pieces, etc. Now it is time to gather the decor from each room and pack it accordingly in the storage containers. When all the lights, garlands, trees, ornaments and ribbons are properly stored we are ready to make some decor adjustments.

Clean!
This is a major one for me as my Christmas decor has been sitting out for 2 months without much dusting or cleaning done around it. Having cleared some surfaces, rearranged some furniture from where the tree was and taken away Christmas accents, those spaces are now waiting to be dusted, vacuumed and washed. This is not my Spirng cleaning time, however, it is a good excuse to refresh the home another time during the year.
Refresh your home ~ Keep it simple
Having all the extra Christmas decor off the shelves, open surfaces and floor space, gives a very free feeling. Do not be to quick to fill an open spot on a shelf just because it’s avaiable. Take time to let a shelf sit vacant or with minimal decor for a day. This will help you assess if you want more stuff on a surface or not. For me, I like to make sure that I am not just keeping things because I think I should. I want to have decor and pieces in my home that I enjoy and that are also pleasing to my eye.

Refresh your home ~ Add some light
The winter months can be dark, cold and long here where I live in the Dakotas. With the extra glow of the Christmas lights gone, it’s nice to add in some lamps, candles and maybe a few small strands of fairy lights. This refreshment encourages a home to still be cozy with the glow of lights and candles when the daylight fades at the end of an evening.

Bring in some different greens & live plants
Real plants are always a nice addition to the dreary days. Having live plants around the house just seems to make me feel hope for the Spring to come. I also used several faux eucalyptus stems I had to tuck into some of the crocks, pitchers and glass pieces. This year I chose to completely tuck away my garlands and winter greenery. In the past I’ve kept some of these out to continue the “wintery” look for a bit longer. The one problem with leaving some greenery out is that it can not be put away completely in the seasonal storage. Opting to completely take down and store the Christmas decor until October comes back around was a choice I am quite pleased with.

Choose a few accent pieces
Choosing a few pieces of decor or furniture as accent pieces is a great way to refresh your home for the winter. My winter scene art print that I used over my grandmother’s wooden vintage stand was one item that I have as an accent piece. It’s wintery and it draws the eye towards this area that I enjoy so much. I also displayed my wood bead garlands that had been used on my Christmas tree. Reusing decor pieces in different seasons is a frugal way to decorate.

Refresh your home ~ Bring in some reading material
Books and magazines are great winter items to have around as added decor. We are inside more during these months, making it a great time to read and learn some new skills. I enjoy having vintage books here and there, but I will also keep my garden and home decor books, and cooking magazines around.
